Cheap Perfume from a Street Vendor? We’ll Pass.

We Smell a Scam

You’ve seen the guys – they set up shop on busy city streets selling Gucci purses, Rolex watches, and Versace sunglasses.  Today, something different!  Designer perfume… for only five dollars a bottle!  Both men’s and women’s fragrances: Dior, Vera Wang, Armani, DKNY.  For only five dollars, just how legitimate can these perfumes be?

Lost Jobs and Money

The counterfeiting of designer goods has become a huge business. According to Harper’s Bazaar, American companies lose $20 billion and about 750,000 jobs each year from counterfeit goods. Counterfeit fragrances are particularly tempting because not only are bottles much cheaper than the real thing, but perfume not something that you openly carry around where people could be able to spot the difference.  For more information on Counterfeiting and its effect on the economy, click here.

Rashes and Urine…not so cute

Bargain shoppers, beware! Not only is purchasing counterfeit goods illegal, but fake perfumes and colognes can also be very harmful and dangerous to your skin! The ingredients used in imitation fragrances do not undergo the standard safety protocol that legitimate ones are required to pass. These fakes can in effect cause skin irritation, burning, and rashes. In some cases, traces of urine were found in the fraudulent potions! (That fact right there was reason enough for us to never buy perfume off the street!).

Germany Fragrance FinesHow to Spot a Fake

You can probably assume that if it’s coming out of a garbage bag or a van on the city street corner, it’s more than likely fake.  There are also visual clues to help you detect the fakes even if your nose may not trained to smell the difference. Typically, counterfeit packaging will slightly differ from the real thing. Check out the font and the placement of the wordings, logos, and trademarks. Also, examine the coloring of the actually fragrance itself. In addition, a legitimate seller should be able to provide you with a certification of authenticity.

The easiest way to tell if a fragrance is real or counterfeit is to go by your instinct. If the deal is too good to be true, it probably is! That isn’t to say that you can’t find real discount perfume and colognes online for great low prices. In fact, you can find hundreds of 100% authentic designer fragrances at Discount Beauty Center.

Salon Quality Shampoos

“Did You Just Get Your Hair Done?”

There’s something so unique and luxurious about your hair when you leave the hair salon.  Your hair feels extra soft, extra smooth, and smells amazing!   While drugstore shampoos and conditioners tend to work just fine in most cases, there is a reason why salons don’t typically use them!

mastey

An article by Hair News Magazine admits that while not all professional shampoos and conditioners are necessarily worth how expensive they are, many of them do contain important ingredients that really are better for your hair than the average drugstore shampoo!

DBC carefully selects only the best quality salon shampoos and conditioners for our customers.  Whenever a stylist pressures you to buy their salon brand shampoo, check the ingredients.  Salon products should contain gentle surfactants (ammonium laurel sulfate, sodium laurel sulfate, etc) that are the ingredients that make the shampoo lather.   They recommend products with sodium laureth sulfate, which is the most gentle of all the surfactants.

Artec White Violet Shampoo

We recommend hair products from professional brands such as Artec, by Loreal ProfessionalEnjoy, and Mastey.

Substitute these products for your normal shampoo and you’ll have your friends constantly asking you, “did you just get your hair done?”

Self Tanning 101

We’d Rather Be at the Beach…

While we’d much rather rather spend a day at the beach, self tanning can be a fantastic (and healthier) alternative for getting that sun-kissed look that we’ve been missing these past few months!

Self tanners often get a bad rep for being messy and smelly.  And we can’t forget how they were once notorious for turning the skin into that streaky orange color.  But in recent years, companies have gone to great lengths to perfect their tanners.  These days, most over the counter tanners create a much more natural looking tan.

Self Tanning Tips for First Timers

  • Start out with lighter shades of tanner to see how your skin reacts.  You would rather see subtle results at first than extreme ones!
  • Test out a small, inconspicuous patch of skin before applying to the entire body
  • Exfoliate your skin before application to remove any excess dead skin cells.
  • After you apply the product, wash your hands to avoid staining your palms or other objects you might touch.
  • Use cotton balls to apply to your hands and fingers.
  • Read the instructions on the label!  (We can’t stress this one enough!)  Every product is made a little differently, so it is important to follow how each one is supposed to be used!
  • Even more sunless tanning tips.

At Home Sunless Tanning Options

Self tanners come in several different forms.  Depending on what sort of results you want should determine which technique is right for you.

jergensTanning Moisturizers

Tanning Moisturizers combine very small amounts of tanning ingredients with your daily moisturizer.  With moisturizers, it can be difficult to get a noticeable tan on the first use, but over time they gradually produce a very natural tan.  Moisturizing self tanners are perfect for if you have fair skin.   We recommend Jergens Natural Glow Foaming Moisturizer

Tanning Sprays

Tanning sprays or mists both leave your skin with an even bronze glow.  They are perfect if you don’t have a lot of time because they can cover large areas of the skin in one quick spraying motion.  They dry much faster than moisturizers, often on the spot without leaving any greasy residue.  We recommend Fake Bake Instant Self-Tan Spray

tan-towel

Self Tanning Towelettes

Towelettes are the easiest of the three to use and leave the least amount of messy residue!  They are ideal for covering up tan lines or or smaller areas of the skin because all you have to do is wipe them to apply!  We recommend Tan Towel Classic Half Body Towelettes

Other Quick Tan Options

If you’re still unsure about self tanning products, you can always fake a tan with bronzer!  We advise using a large bronzer brush for all over, natural looking coverage.   The only precaution is that the shimmer of bronzer can be more or less noticeable in different lightings.  Keep this in mind when applying to make sure you’re not too sparkly! For loose powder, we recommend Bare Escentuals Faux-Tan Powder, for a compressed powder, try Physicians Formula Pyramid Bronzer

Dangers of Tanning

We can’t discuss self tanners without quickly mentioning that tanning beds can be very dangerous.   They have become accepted as part of the norm for our society, which is not necessarily a good thing.  Women in the UK have taken the obsession with tanning to a different level and have been injecting themselves with an illegal and unsafe chemical that can make skin appear tanner.  We all love to feel a natural glow to our skin, and once in a while it’s great to sit out in the sun (with SPF of course). But it’s important not to get carried away!

Tell us how you maintain your tan all year long? Would you ever consider melanotan (skin pigmenting) injections?

Bangs are Back

Snag a New Look Without Going Overboarderin

It seems like everyone’s been talking about Erin from MTV’s The City’s bangs! These long, straight bangs, or, “blunt bangs” as they are called in the fashion and beauty world are the newest runway and celebrity trend.  Major Hollywood celebrities like Kate Hudson, Jessica Alba, and Leighton Meester have all been spotted sporting the new look.

Is This Hairstyle for You?

Blunt bangs are perfect for you if you want to add style and edge to a basic look, without making a huge, dramatic change. Celebrity hair stylist Nicholas Penna, Jr. says that while long bangs look best with straight, even hair, they can be rocked by almost anyone when done right!  Whether your hair is long, short, curly, or straight, blunt bangs are the this season’s most popular (and, surprisingly manageable) hairstyle.

Tips for Do it Yourself Gorgeous Bangs

  1. Find a good pair of hair scissors. In a recent interview with Allure Magazine, celebrity hairstylist Mark Townsend recommends hair shears instead of regular scissors because they have super thin blades, perfect for snipping away just precisely at the bangs.
  2. With dry hair, gently pull down on the front section that you want to be bangs and hold them with your thumb pointing upright.  (Be careful not to pull too tight – your hair will naturally spring up a little!)
  3. Start off slow. Snip away tiny pieces at first and see how you like it.  You can always snip more, but you can never snip less!
  4. Leave the layers around your temples slightly longer than the rest of the hair for a natural looking shape.

Hair Products and Tools to Perfect the Look

The best part about bangs, if you don’t like them, they will always grow back! Bella Sugar gives some great tips on how to grow out your bangs.  But because we love this hairstyle so much, we have a feeling you won’t need them!
