Kiss My Face

With over twenty-five years of experience in the organic beauty business, the company has become a respected leader in the world of natural body care.   Kiss My Face products contain zero artificial colors, chemicals, or animal ingredients.  They are particularly famous for their unique use of olive oil in many of their products.  Olive oil has both anti-inflammatory properties, in addition to help soften and smooth the skin.

Their Olive Oil Bar Soap is made up of 86% pure olive oil.  This simple formula was listed by AM new york as their “best beauty buy” in November of 2008.

We also recommend Kiss My Face’s Ginger Mango Lip Balm, which is also recommended by Sprig.com, a website dedicated to improving the “greenness” of consumer products.  The lip balm is created with paraben-free and organic ingredients such as beeswax and canola oil.  Even the packaging is green – it’s 100% biodegradable.

Physician’s Formula Organic Wear

The professionals in cosmetics have created a new line of 100% natural makeup.  Physician’s Formula Organic Wear is the first line of cosmetics in the United States to be certified by ECOCERT, an internationally recognized guarantee that a brand upholds environmentally friendly practices in all aspects of the product.

Physician’s Formula Organic Wear products are packaged in environmentally friendly containers that contain 93% less plastic than traditional makeup compacts.  Their products are free of any unnatural chemicals or preservatives and are paraben-free.

We love their 100% organic loose powders, available in beige, translucent light, and creamy natural.  We also are in love with their Organic Blush in Rosy.  The two shades blend together naturally to create a stunning rosy glow.

Burt’s Bees

Burt’s Bees was founded on the principle of being earth friendly, and been dedicated ever since to being “the greenest personal care company on Earth.” Not only are their products made from the most natural ingredients, but their packaging is made with environmentally responsible materials.  They even created the TerraSkin Wraps, a treeless type of paper that is used to package most of their bar soaps.

We recommend trying Burt’s Bees Head to Toe Starter Kit, which contains their most popular and best selection of travel sized cleansers, balms, and lotions.  We know you’ll fall in love with each and every product.

Our favorite product right now is their Doctor Res-Q Ointment, a powerful, yet gentle formula that aids in healing cuts and scrapes and contains specific ingredients to prevent scarring.

Nail Tricks for Spring

A Few Simple Tips for Hot Spring Nailsessie-limelight2

Spring is here, which means that our nails can finally look cute (no more winter dry cuticles)  and we can finally justify a pedicure (bring on the cute strappy sandals!)  This PrettyCity shows article gives tips from celebrity manicurist Alisha Rimando who explains how to create a fun “ombre” nail look in only a few easy steps

Other great manicure tips from this article:

  • Bright colors are really “in” for Spring, so try out some fantastic hot pinks and electric greens, like the ones in Essie’s new “Neon Collection” which features Flirty Fuchsia, Funky Limelight, Perky Purple, and Punchy Pink.punchy-pink
  • To keep your nails looking great between manicures, be sure that you choose a color at the salon that you have at home (or bring your own!) so you can easily do touch ups!  Common brands at most salons are OPI, Essie, and China Glaze.
  • Don’t be afraid to bring along your own base and top coats to the salon as well.  Often times, the quality they use might not be as good as your own, thus causing premature and avoidable chipping.  PrettyCity recommends Zoya’s Anchor BaseCoat, Armor TopCoat, and Hurry Up Speed Dry Drops.

PrettyCity is an online publication that sends out weekly newsletters to feature the best products and the top salons that are specific to your city! We love the tips they give, and many of their top product recommendations can be found here at Discount Beauty Center!

In the news…TheBalm Cosmetics

It’s… The Balm!

thebalm

With clever names like “Hot Mama,” DownBoy, and “Boyz’N My Berry,” it’s no wonder that TheBalm cosmetics has been receiving a lot of media buzz recently.   Jennifer Sullivan, a makeup artist, and TheBalm’s VP of Training and Education, tells BeautyNewsNYC that “theBalm’s multi-use products are made of the highest quality ingredients, perfect for today’s savvy woman who wants to look amazing in five minutes while being health conscious.”  In addition, almost the entire line is paraben-free!

What started out as a small, single product line has grown into a blossoming makeup company. TheBalm was founded in 2000 by ex TV producer Marissa Shipman when she realize that her love of makeup could actually be her career! She bought a few books on how to create makeup and the rest is history. Starting out with her first product, plumping  lipgloss, TheBalm has truly taken off in the past nine years.  Shipman is dedicated to her brand, which she calls her “baby” and she claims that there’s a personal story behind practically every product that she creates!

Have you tried dry shampoo yet?

Busy? Traveling? Running late? or just plain lazy?  batiste

We have a million better things to do in a day than wash our hair.  And, studies even show that washing your hair too much can actually be unhealthy.  WebMD says “over-washing can wash away your hair’s natural moisture that helps your hair look healthy, making your hair dry.”

That’s where Batiste Dry Shampoo comes in!  This gentle spray in hair freshener leaves hair soft, fresh, and grease-free in between washes.   It also adds body to hair – perfect when styling!  Simply spray on your hair’s roots and massage gently into the scalp!  Batiste Dry Shampoo is available in Original and Tropical (which has a more exotic fragrance).

Our best-selling mascaras!

mascara

Mascara can make or break a flawless makeup look just like a pair of shoes can make or break a flawless outfit.  But when was the last time you treated yourself to a new tube?

Given the economic situation, we have all been scaling back on buying things for ourselves.  This has translated into many of us holding on to a favorite tube of mascara much longer than normal.  The recommended expiration date for mascara is only about three months.  Mascara tends to “goes bad” significantly faster than most other makeup products because it’s made with ingredients that dry out faster.  Plus, mascara wands come in close contact with your eyes, which can contaminate the wand with bacteria.

We’ve compiled a list of six of our best selling mascaras.  And the best part is – they’re all under twenty dollars!  Go ahead, treat yourself.

Too Faced Lash Injection Mascara

We mentioned this new product a few weeks ago when we introduced the new Spring 2009 collection from Too Faced.  This product already is a favorite for customers!  Described as “lash extensions in a tube,” this unique mascara formula actually coats your lashes to extend them further than the natural lash.   Too Faced Lash Injection comes in Pitch Black and Hot Chocolate

L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Mascara

For voluminous lashes that appear five times thicker than your normal eyelashes, try L’Oreal’s Voluminous Mascara.  Their mascara wand is designed to thicken your lashes evenly, smoothly, and clump free!  The best part about this mascara, is that it gives you choices.  The original formula and wand come in four shades: black, soft black, blackest black, and black/brown.  There is also a waterproof formula, (perfect if you want to double ensure that your eyelashes stay full throughout the day) and a curved wand version, which adds even more curl and volume.  Daneen, the blogger from the acclaimed beauty website, Spoiled pretty, recently re-fell in love with this mascara.  She says, “L’Oreal Voluminous not only pumped up the volume of my sparse lashes, the mascara took my fringe to new heights…all without clumps. And unlike so many mascaras on the market nowadays, the Voluminous brush doesn’t grab too much product – which is great because I hate having to wipe off excess product.”

Maybelline Great Lash Mascara

You’ve seen the pink tube with the green cap for years at drugstores!  Did you know that not only is Maybelline Great Lash Mascara America’s number one mascara, but it also was the first mascara that was ever officially marketed to the public! (This was back in 1915 when T.L. Williams created a product for his sister Maybelthe rest is history).  It has since then received dozens awards, like Allure Magazine’s 2008 Reader’s Choice award for best drugstore mascara (they claim that every 1.6 seconds, a tube of this mascara is sold); it is also a favorite of celebrity/socialite Kim Kardashian.  The famous mascara is also available in several different shades of black, in a curved applicator, plus comes in a waterproof version.

Urban Decay Big Fatty

True to its name, Urban Decay’s Big Fatty mascara seriously does create the fattest eyelashes possible.  The formula was created with hemp oil to help keep lashes soft and moisturized.  The line is known for having a great selection of colored mascara, for a day or night when you’re feeling a little on the adventurous side.  Urban Decay Big Fatty mascara comes in cool shades like Black Cherry, Electric Blue, and Purple Haze.

L’Oreal Paris Lash Double Extend Beauty Tubes

L’oreal’s double sided mascara brush in its Double Extend Beauty Tubes are actually two products in one!  The first side is used as a primer or base coat, which contains Ceramide R and D-Panthenol, two ingredients that both protect and strengthen your lashes.  The other side contains a top coat that lengthens the lashes, to create a fuller, smudge free look.  The A-list blogger from A Mom in Red High Heels gives a great review of the product, saying, “after doing the ultimate skin care no no and not washing my face before bed I woke up with great looking and smudge free lashes.”

Borghese Superiore State of the Art Mascara

Borghese products are well-known for having intricate formula details that really are geared toward the goal of the product.  Their Superiore State of the Art mascara is no exception.  The mascara contains a hydrolyzed silk-powder foundation that conditions delicate lashes.  It also contains Borghese’s signature Acqua di Vita complex which adds additional moisture and nutrients to the lashes.  Celebrities like Renee Zellweger have all taken a love for this product.  It comes in both black  and brown.

Now that you have six great mascara choices!  Here are 10 quick tips for applying mascara.  Enjoy!

How to Choose the Right Hairbrush Part 2 – Bristle Types

Yesterday, we talked about how to choose the right hairbrush according to brush shape/size.  However, there are also several different types of brush bristles!  In part two of our hairbrush exposé,  we’ve summed up the major types of hairbrush bristles to help you find which one is right for you!

brushes

I always use the same brushes: Mason Pearson for detangling and blowing out bangs and Spornette mixed bristle round brushes for blowouts. The mixed bristles grip the hair and create enough tension to get the hair really smooth without pulling on the hair.

Boar Bristles

Boar bristles are best for creating shiny, sleek hair.  They are designed to hold moisture and to help distribute natural oils from the scalp throughout all of your hair.  Boar bristles are ideal for fine, or damaged hair.   DBC recommends: Mason Pearson All Boar Bristle Brush or Spornette Boar Round Brush (comes in varying diameters).

Nylon Bristles

Nylon or synthetic bristles are best for people who have thicker, curly or wavy hair as these materials are sturdier and can easily run through thicker hair. They are also better for detangling wet hair.  DBC recommends: Spornette Prego Ceramic Nylon round brushes (comes in six different diameter widths) or the Mason Pearson All Nylon Brush

Ionic Bristles

Ionic bristles are a newer technology that typically are found with ceramic round brushes.  Brushes with ionic bristles are designed to distribute the negative ions from the heat of a blow dryer.   This contributes to faster drying time.   Ionic bristles also help the hair retain moisture attract water to make the hair feel softer and appear shinier and frizz-free.

Mixed Bristles

Brushes that have both boar and nylon bristles bring you the best of both worlds!  Not only do you have the boar bristles to give you smooth, shiny hair, but the nylon bristles help for detangling and styling thicker hair.  DBC recommends: the Mason Pearson Popular Mixed Bristle brush or the Spornette Extra Large Combo Brush

Choosing the right hairbrush can be overwhelming!  So many different shapes, lengths, bristles, and brands!  Discount Beauty Center is here to help!  In part one,  we’ve summed up the major types of hairbrushes to help you find which one is right for you!

Paddle Brushes

Paddle brushes are typically square shaped, flat, and fairly wide compared to other brushes. They are great for everyday dry hair brushing and are typically used for smooth, straight styles.  Paddle brushes are best for people who have longer hair, as they cover a lot of surface area at once.  DBC recommends: Elegant Paddle Brush #748.

Cushion Brushes

In1885, Mason Pearson patented the pneumatic hairbrush cushion – at the time, a unique concept for a hairbrush  The Mason Pearson cushion brush is still today one of the most highly coveted hairbrushes on the market.  Cushion brushes are typically oval shaped and the bristles are come out of (what else?!) a cushion.  These brushes are perfect for any hair lengths (especially medium to long hair) and gentle enough for daily hair brushing.  DBC recommends: Mason Pearson Popular Mixed Bristle/Nylon Brush.

Vent Brushes

Vent brushes literally have open “vents” on them. They help with faster blow drying and with adding volume because the vents allow for increased air circulation.  These brushes are ideal when styling dry hair or detangling wet hair.   DBC recommends: Elegant Brush #608 Tunnel Vent Brush

Styling Brushes

Styling brushes have only about 5-8 rows of bristles that are typically made with nylon pins and boar bristles.  Their main purpose is to “style” the hair.  Many styling brushes are based on the “Denman Style” brush, a brush in which the cushions is rubber and slightly rounded to give the hair adding volume while brushing.  These brushes can be used to style all hair types.  DBC recommendsElegant “Denman Style” Brush #604.

Round Brushes

Round brushes come in many different diameters and their main purpose is to aid styling and blow-drying.  They can be used to straighten wavy hair or to create volume in straight hair.  Choose a large diameter if you have longer hair and want straight strands or choose a smaller diameter if you have shorter hair or want to use to create curls.  DBC recommends: Spornette Pronto Nano Round Brushes.  They come in 3 inch, 2 inch, 2½ inch, or 1½ inch diameters.

Thermal Brushes

Thermal brushes have real metal (usually aluminum) barrels and are ideal for styling while blowdrying.  The metal heats up like a curling iron, which leads to easy control over styling. They come in smaller diameters than your normal round brush.  These are ideal for creating curls and body in straight hair.   DBC recommends: Helen of Troy Hot Air Tangle Free Thermal Brushes.  Choose from ¾” diameter, 1″ diameter, and 1½” diameter.

Ceramic Brushes

Ceramic brushes are a new technology of round brushes that contain a metal, ceramic core.  They are uniquely designed to help distribute the heat from the hair dryer and to speed up drying time, and at the same reduce frizz and static.   DBC recommends: Phillips Ceramic Vortexx Brushes.  Choose from the 2¼” diameter (Vortexx 4000), the 3″ diameter (Vortexx 6000), or the 3½” diameter (Vortexx 8000). Or, for extra tourmaline technology, try the  Hai Elite 1″ Round Brush.
