Dress to Impress at your Next Career Fair

No matter what you’re doing, first impressions are everything. So when it comes to the business world, you should always dress for the job you want, not the job you have.

When you’re young it’s almost second nature to be fashion conscious and try out new trends.  However, when it comes to the professional world you only have one shot to get it right. College career fairs are great ways to get your foot in the door, so make sure that the shoe always fits. To ensure a great first impression and portray that you’re the ideal employee, try these five fashion savvy yet professional looks at your next college career fair.

The Young and Fashionable Intern

Not all companies have a strict dress code, as some value your ability not only to group think, but also to be independent. A great way to show your individuality is through your clothes but, remember to keep it professional.1

Color pants are all the rage nowadays but, you don’t want to stand out like a sore thumb so try a cute yet simple printed shirt. Keep the print between two and three colors, anything more than that and you might look too busy. You want to be seen AND heard, not just seen.  If you’re staying the neutral route with your top add a bit of color to your wardrobe with a colored pencil skirt. Go for style when it comes to your shoes but keep them practical and of course tasteful. Wedges are a sure bet in this instance and to complete your look have a chick portfolio case on hand to carry your resume in.

The Retail Maven

No matter the job you are seeking to gain, be sure to dress the part. In working retail, it is likely that you might find yourself being a customer’s personal stylist so you’d want to show you have a style yourself. The key to this look is comfortable shoes as it is more than likely you will be on your feet often working the floor as an assistant manager or even visual merchandiser.2

Flat styled shoes are key to a chic and sophisticated look meant for a retail setting and when it comes to shoes they are as comfortable as you get. With spring just around the corner, white pants are an appropriate choice for your next career fair as they can easily lend themselves to a business setting. When it comes to your top go for color to show some bubbly personality which is important in retail but don’t go overboard. Instead of utilizing prints, don a solid color blouse with some interesting detail, such as this salmon colored top with release tucks up at the collar. Most retail stores carry some form of jewelry so it’s ok to glam up your look but, be sure to keep it low key and moderate in color.

The Class Act

If there is one rule that every girl should know when it comes to style is to “keep it classy”. There is nothing classier than the little black dress but, instead of going for Audrey Hepburn, throw some white into your wardrobe and channel your own inner classy working girl.3

The idea of this look is to look put together with little effort.  To start this look, you should go for a simple yet chic black and white blouse and pair it with something like this cardigan styled blazer. A pair of fitted black pants is a must in this wardrobe, so be sure that your pants are tailored to your body type. It will help you pull off this look even more, especially when paired with a set of stylish ballerina flats. Since you never know when you’re going to be asked to share your portfolio, always be ready with your digital portfolio on hand.

The Corporate College Girl

Though career fairs may be on your college turf, don’t be fooled to think that you can dress in your usual sweats or a nice pair of jeans. You can get your first real gig at a college career fair so you want to look sharp. It might be far from your comfort zone but you can really impress a future employer with a good dress suit.4

You don’t have to go with the mundane suit and tie when it comes to dressing the corporate part but, if you are trying to score some brownie points, start with a tailored jacket. There is nothing worse than an ill fitting jacket so be sure that it fits in all the right areas but at the same time allows for comfortable movement. Black is the go to color when it comes to suits, however; navy, gray and khaki are just as acceptable. If you can’t find a pant or skirt that comes with the jacket, go for a darker color than the suit jacket. This simple yet dark gray pencil skirt is a perfect example of how to pull the look off. Don’t forget that you have to wear something under your jacket and with spring on the cusps of winter, a sleeveless blouse is always a good consideration. Finally accessorize with a watch to make sure you’re always on time and a nice pair of low heels will have you all set and ready for the hot seat.

The Corporate College Girl with Color

If you love the Corporate College Girl look, but not so much the dull colors it sports don’t worry, colors are now becoming accepted in the professional world which means you can brighten up the hum drum attire a bit.5

The first rule when it comes to color is to keep it tame. If you want to go for a red jacket then make sure it isn’t bright, instead go for something like this wine colored suit top. For a colored suit jacket keep it neutral down below so khaki, black or even white is appropriate. Match the look with an off white blouse, watch and black heels to give you a put together and sophisticated look.

Remember, when it comes to career fairs you don’t have to sacrifice your personal style to meet corporate guidelines. If you’re hoping to impress a certain business, research that company’s culture and dress accordingly, this can get you some serious brownie points in the interview process.

Why Winter Sun Protection is a Must

For most of us, the first time we had ever been exposed to sunscreen was by our mothers slathering it all over us while she fussed about the importance of its use. sunFrom adolescence to the teenage years we rebelled one time or another and found out the hard way that too little sunscreen could turn into a painful situation.  Sunburn is a common occurrence when we fail to either use sunscreen.  We only think about sunscreen in the summer but the thing is, sunscreen isn’t just for the beach. Sure our skin can get burned by the sun but, it also can receive the same damage from the cold as well especially in seriously cold weather. Winter sunburn is something everyone should worry about.

Best Movie Kisses of 2012

The first movie kiss was witnessed in the 1896 film, appropriately called The Kiss and from there the ball got rolling.  Despite the new technology used in movies that provide the audiences with amazing high action spots, huge explosions and jaw dropping computer generated sceneries, nothing is as memorable as a great kissing scene.

Whether it’s hot and steamy or sweet and romantic, a kiss has a way of stealing your breath.  A good kiss requires chemistry, so when an actress and an actor have that, they can make us believe they’re head over heels for one another. From a quick kiss, to full on make out session, they’ll have you saying ‘awww’ or ‘oooo’. The one that always comes to my mind is when Rose and Jack kissed in Titanic.

Here are some of the best movie kisses from 2012.

The Movie:The Words

Romance tends to come in the form of a novel, so we’re not surprised that we found just that in the 2012 movie The Words.  In it, Bradley Cooper plays a young writer who becomes famous after publishing the next great American Novel. A story from the past parallels that of the present in which Cooper’s character lives in with his wife played by Zoe Saldana. It’s hard to say that just one kissing scene stands out in particular as the couple shares plenty, but what is great about it, is it’s true to life feel. It has both ups and downs especially when Cooper puts his professional life above his personal one. thewrods

The Movie:The Amazing Spider Man

We all remember the awesome kiss from the first Spiderman that had Toby McGuire hanging upside down in the rain kissing Kristen Dunst.  With that said, it shouldn’t surprise anyone that the sequel had a scene stealing kiss itself. Real life couple, James Garfield and Emma Stone, found themselves playing opposite one another in the Marvel based superhero flick.

spirdermankissThe scene that puts this movie on our list is when Peter Parker spills the beans of his secret identity to Gwen by pulling her into his arms with the use of his spider abilities for a kiss before leaping off the building and leaving her utterly confused. Though this isn’t as believable as some kisses, this is sure fitting of a super hero. Nothing says I love you like planting a kiss on your love interest before you run off to fight the bad guys.

The Movie:Hunger Games

Not all books adapted to the silver screen are successful but Hunger Games is one of the exceptions as a thrilling action filled movie that pits twelve districts against one another for a battle to the death. The scenario might seem a little out there but, plenty of Hunger Games fans feel it’s believable, including the kiss that occurs when the heroine Katniss finds Peeta injured in a cave.

What makes this kiss so great is it leaves you wondering how Katniss really feels about Peeta when it comes to be known that she kissed him in order for them to appear as star crossed lovers and win the favor of the audience. But whether or not it was fake matters little, as a kiss for survival is pretty sexy and that’s why it is on our list.

The Movie:The Vow

If you’re looking for an ultimate romance flick, look no further than The Vow. It is one of the best romance movies released in 2012. The film stared Rachel McAdams mostly known for her role in the chick flick The Notebook and of course Hollywood heartthrob Channing Tatum. The film is a classic boy meets girl story but with a twist as McAdam’s loses her memory after a car accident. The best kiss in the movie happens before the tragedy when McAdam’s and Tatum have a pretty hot make out session on the floor of her studio.vow

There have been plenty of remarkable kisses through the years thanks to the silver screen. 2012 surely had their share of epic on-screen kisses. From superheroes to star-crossed lovers the year was filled with them all and hopefully your Valentine’s Day will be filled with just as many if not more.

How to Make Your Lips Irrekissible

Valentine’s Day is the international day of love so it is natural that the lovers’ holiday is accompanied by roses, teddy bears, candy and of course great kisses.  candyheartsA day like this is sure to have you seeing red, hopefully the good kind; you know a box of heart shaped chocolates or your favorite brand of luscious lipstick. Whatever the case may be, you want to make sure your lips are at their best because you never know when someone might plant one on you. Get ready to pucker up this Valentine’s Day with these sure fire ways to guarantee ultra kissable lips.

Keep your lips hydrated

We all know by now that lipstick has the tendency of drying out our lips and mixed with kissing, this isn’t a match made in heaven. lipsticks redDon’t let your lipstick ruin Valentine’s Day having your Valentine asking for his chocolates back. To keep this from happening, make sure you’re using a lipstick that has a healthy dose of moisturizer in it to keep your lips hydrated all day long. No one likes faded lips, so try a lipstick with a guaranteed long lasting factor. Some great brands for this include Clinique, Sisley, Revlon, Almay and Mac.

If you’re not a fan of lipstick and just want a great luscious shine to your lips, invest in some long lasting lip gloss by Gerdon, LDM Paris, Clinique Long Lasting Glosswear or NYC City Proof Lip Gloss.

Pick the right shade for you

Be sure your lipstick is suitable for your skin tone.  With the new innovations in today’s world, cosmetic companies are doing a great job in creating beauty products that cater to specific complexions to help the makeup buying process go a lot smoother. This is great news for women, especially for those doing some last minute beauty supplies shopping or just hate standing in the aisles for minutes on hand.  color lipsticks

Makeup Tip: For fair skin, red lipstick tends to look flattering along with any other shade in the color family but, beware of darker shades. You don’t want to look like you’re getting ready for Halloween, on the same note, anything pastel can easily wash you out. If you are of a darker complexion, don’t be afraid to go for the red lipstick if that’s what you want, however, a subdued red color might be more flattering than a bright crimson.

Exfoliate and Moisturize those Puckers

For some, Valentine’s Day is like game day and any good player would know that you have to pre-game in advance if you want to reach the end zone. You need to make sure your lips are ready for a touchdown. Lip color can easily hide our not so kissable lips but it doesn’t mean that the problem isn’t there. sugarlipsTo make your lips super kissable, exfoliate them regularly. This especially should be done the day before you’re expected to pucker up. Exfoliating can turn your dry lips into smooth, plump kissable lips. There are several ways to keep your lips exfoliated from applying a sugar scrub, to gently massaging them with a soft bristled toothbrush or even buying a lip exfoliate with micro-beads.

Kissable lips just don’t stop at the exfoliation process as soft doesn’t always mean healthy, so be sure to apply a moisturizer to your lips daily. saliorkissThis way, whether or not you’re doing a nude lip or a ruby red, your lips will be at their best.

Your Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to come to a screeching halt when that special someone leans in for a quick one thanks to un-kissable lips. With a little preparation before that big night, you can have your lips ready for a little one on one action in no time.

Weight Packing Habits to Kick

With the improvement in technology, demanding jobs and everything else that life throws at us, it is no wonder we live such fast paced lives. Though some may strive off the hustle and bustle, our bodies would prefer that we take it one step at a time. Though we can’t break the fast paced life cycle we find ourselves in, we can break the habits that cause us to pack on the pounds. A little bit can go a long way so if you find yourself with some weight packing tendencies it’s time to kick them. Here are some common habits and ways you can turn them from bad habits, to healthy living.

Stop Taking the Elevatorstairs

A good percentage of jobs today require you to sit at a desk from 9am to 5pm. Although you can burn calories by just sitting around, you can burn a whole lot more with simply changing the way you get to the third floor. Whenever you have the option of walking, go for it.  Walking is great for your cardiovascular system and promotes heart and blood vessel health. Not only that, but because walking is considered a form of aerobic exercise you can benefit in a variety of areas from blood pressure, cholesterol and most importantly weight management.

Try employing walking after lunch so that your food doesn’t immediately go and sit in your stomach. Even if you are not active for the rest of the day, walking 10-15 minutes every day after lunch can make a difference.

Late Night Snacking

With fast food restaurants now staying open to midnight or later, a late night “snack” can be hard to resist. Working late or just pure boredom can lead you to getting a bite to eat long after the dinner bell. This can be counterproductive if you’re trying to lose weight. no_icecreamWhen you consume food at hours that you are least active you burn fewer calories and are more likely to gain weight from over eating.

Late night snacking isn’t an easy habit to break but there are ways you can curve excessive weight gain from doing so. Whenever you have an after dark craving, instead of reaching for ice cream or a bag of chips go for a more healthy option such as apple slices, carrots or even popcorn. Low calorie foods are always the best option in this case.

Though night eating is caused by a variety of things including stress, it also can be a direct result of low calorie intake. Never skip breakfast as we all know that breakfast is an essential part of our daily nutrition which means when you skip it you miss out on those calories which you are then trying to make up for after hours.

Sitting in the Office

standing desk

Being on your feet all day at work doesn’t sound ideal and that’s why many of us take to sitting whenever we can. It is understandable that you want to be as comfortable as possible during your 9 to 5 but ask yourself, is it worth gaining weight? Not only do you risk the weight gain with prolonged sitting but, also put yourself at risk for other health issues such as heart disease, cancer and diabetes.

It might sound weird and maybe distracting to others but standing at your desk instead of sitting can curb packing on the pounds. Think about incorporating podiums in your work space that will allow you to stand and do you work without hunching down to your desk. If this doesn’t work for you, try swapping out your old desk for a newer and taller one or if you are low on money, simply buy some risers to give your work station a much needed boost in height.

Coffee Shop Hangouts

There’s nothing wrong with a cup of coffee every once in a while but, like with all things, too much of a good thing, can be a bad thing. Coffee shops are great places to meet up with friends and co-workers for some downtime but, it is also a “great” way to indulge in some not so healthy sugary goodness.coffee

With chains like Starbucks and their wide range of coffee based drinks that you can find in Tall, Venti or Grande, you will also see they come in some sweet flavors. From French Vanilla to Hazelnut, White Chocolate and Mocha they have it all not to mention being able to add a shot of this or a shot of that. It’s not just the coffee that adds calories but, the pastries that coffee shops tend to offer filled with several grams of fat. Add these factors to just hanging out in a booth for an hour or two every other day and you have yourself a classic weight packing habit.

healthy living pInstead of heading to your local coffee shop, try meeting up with friends at a juice bar that has healthier options. However, if you absolutely must grab a cup of Joe, skip on all the extras and take it to the streets. Talk, walk and drink, that way you are at least being productive.

Anyone can tell you that habits are hard to break.  Especially when you have been doing them for years but, it’s never too late to make a change.  If you find yourself gaining weight, stop and think if you are guilty of any of these bad habits and make the necessary adjustments. It may take a while to break a habit, given that taking the elevator might be a bit more enticing then climbing a few flights of stairs early in the morning but, when your health is in question there is no such thing as a short cut.

5 Tips to Organized Beauty Supplies

Long hair or short, lip gloss girl or full on face femme, chances are you have a host of makeup and hair supplies sitting around your house and not exactly in any particular order. makeup_messDon’t worry, we’ve all been guilty of this at one point in time but, ask yourself a question, you would not store your pants with your tops so why would you throw your hair dryer in with your stash of lipstick? When it comes to your bathroom counters and bedroom vanities you should avoid the hair rising shenanigans that your cosmetics and hair care can cause. Here are five easy and effective ways to organize your beauty and hair supplies.

Out with the Old Products

When you’re unorganized it’s pretty easy to keep things that you really don’t need or just don’t use at all. Most likely, you have a favorite makeup applicator or hair brush and there are even greater chances that they aren’t in the condition they makeup_trashuse to be in. It doesn’t have to be edible to have an expiration date which means, yes, even your makeup expires so be sure to check to see if you have any outdated cosmetics sitting around. If you do, throw them out. If you haven’t used a certain makeup in the last three to five months it is likely that you won’t again, so go ahead and toss that as well. However, if you have any makeup that you haven’t opened and don’t have the inkling to ever use it, pass it off to a fellow girlfriend. The great thing about this step is that not only does it help you sort out your beauty supplies but it also promotes good hygiene.

Same thing goes for your hair tools such as curling irons and hair dryers. If you have a curling iron or even straightening iron that has began to rust/brown around the plate due to accumulation of hair products burning, get rid of them. It isn’t always as obvious to when it’s time to throw out your hair dryer but a good sign would be the constant sound of buzzing or wavering that can be heard during use or a burning smell.

Storing Your Beauty Supplies

dryer_straightProviding storage for your things is a key step to getting organized and staying organized. Designate a drawer for your stick products that can include eye liner, lip liner, mascara, eye brow pencil and lipstick. Invest in a vanity set that can be used separately from your mirror that you can hang on your wall that is designated for just hair supplies. Drawers and stands for makeup will help eliminate clutter and free up much needed counter space. Get creative with this step as it can easily be made into a DIY project. Use a salt and pepper shaker to hold things such as bobby pins and hair clips or get a plastic shoe rack to hang over your door. This is a great place to put large hair supplies that might not fit in the vanity such as hair spray and shampoo bottles.

Categorize Your Beauty Supplies

With use of storage and labeling, categorizing your belongings will help you manage your cosmetics accordingly. We’ve all accidentally ruined one thing or another by makeup_clusterdoing something like not completely closing the lid of our fingernail polish remover causing it to leak out into our eye makeup that happened to be in the same drawer. Well no more. It’s time to start categorizing your beauty care to keep these things from happening. Loose powders can easily cause a mess and when you’re trying to get organized a mess is the last thing that you want.

When storing your makeup, make an effort to put like products together. Not only does this keep the little accidents from happening but it also helps you keep track of what you have and know exactly where it goes.

Stash By Use

Most people have a favorite lipstick, eyeliner or evencoverups hair spray that they use practically every day and are their go to for any time of day. If this sounds like you then it makes little sense in rifling through all your things and creating a mess when you know exactly what you want.

Create a special container, preferably something that is easy to access and visible and put all your daily use things here such as straightening iron (my Babyliss Pro is always in need), blush and mascara. Every once in a while you might find yourself in a rush so, having a go-to stash would be beneficial because whenever push comes to shove you can always grab the entire display and jump in the car. All your essentials are with you and you didn’t have to rifle through drawers and cabinets to find that comb that works magic on your bed head.

Condense What You Have

Condensing your beauty and hair supplies may sound similar to the out with the old trick, but with condensing you take it a storganized_makeupsep further. Instead of throwing things away, you are simply swapping out larger sizes for small and turning the half empty glass into a fuller one. For example, if you have half a bottle of shampoo sitting around, transfer the contents into a smaller bottle. Same can be done with perfume, finger nail polish remover and even liquid foundation.

Though this works with a lot of items, you might find that you have some things that are just hard to minimize such as hair sprays, curling irons and hair dryers. Bigger may be better but try investing in travel sized bottles of hairspray, folding curling irons and small sized hair dryers. Turning your hair and beauty products into travel sized options is a great way to maximize your counter space and minimize your product size.

You don’t have to let a life of beauty run your life and overrun your bathroom counter. Simplifying your beauty and hair supplies can be a daunting task but it only takes five easy steps for you to get organized. Try them out and see the results, I’m sure you’ll be satisfied.
