How to Make Lipstick Last

Red LipstickThe season, the time of day, your skin tone, your outfit . . . these all play a pivotal role in your decision on which colors to wear on your lips. Every outfit or makeup look can always use a pop of color. Whether you decide on a ruby red or a shimmery nude, a pressing concern is the question of how to make the look last. Yes, you can repeatedly dart into to the bathroom to reapply your lipstick or keep a mirror in your bag so you can smear it on in public, but doesn’t that get to be tedious if not a little awkward? There are simple practices you can take in your morning routine to give your lips long lasting color.

The miracle product, the answer to your prayers, is rather uncomplicated: loose powder. It may sound a bit odd but, if you follow certain steps, your lipstick will look freshly applied for many hours to come.

1) To make your lip products last, it is important that they are applied to a clean surface. Therefore, once or twice a week, gently rub your lips with a washcloth to get rid of flaky dead cells. Follow this with nourishing lip balm to provide your pucker with the moisture it needs and, voilà, your lips are soft and smooth for your daily makeup routine.

1002clp400_bd8f772) With the right shade of lip liner, outline the shape of your lips, making them really pop. Proceed to swipe on that favorite color, but be sure to do so lightly.

3) With your finger or a brush, apply a thin layer of loose powder (such as this one by Elizabeth Arden) to your lips. This acts like a matte primer, making that color everlasting. Put on a second layer of the color.

4) For bolder and darker colors, use a small brush to define the outside of your mouth with concealer for a look that is clean of smudgy edges.

With these techniques, you’re sure to last all day or night without having to check a mirror or excuse yourself to the ladies room. After all, when you’re having a fun time, the last thing you want to worry about is reapplying lipstick.

Caring for Hair Extensions

7388756160_b2d03243c2_oFor those who adore their short haircut but sometimes find themselves lusting over the long locks, hair extensions may be your answer. Even those who want to add more voluptuous oomph to their tresses can reap the benefits. Countless celebrities use extensions to add irresistible volume to their aesthetic, and now you can too!

Synthetic hair extensions are on the lower end of the pricing scale; because they don’t quite capture the bounce and texture of real hair, use synthetic clip-ones for fun occasions rather than every-day usage. Reversely, extensions made from human hair cost more but, because of the seamlessness in which they blend with your own mane, they will allow you to maintain a natural look.

To extend the life of your human hair extensions beyond a few uses, you must maintain them as you would your own locks. Wash them with a quality shampoo once every 2-3 weeks and use a conditioner to help keep them smooth and silky. Always make sure to pat them dry with a towel, as leaving them unnecessarily wet for an extended period of time can lead them to become tangled and weakened. To prevent knots, consider wrapping your hair (and extensions) with a satin scarf  when sleeping.

8551939338_92e28c9c9cExtensions can also be curled or straightened to fit your styling needs, and protect your investment with a spray that shields your hair from the the appearance of being fried and frazzled. Brands such as Alterna have products like this blowout creamto guard from heat’s injurious effects on your hair and extensions alike. When maintaining your hair clip-ons and extensions, use a gentler hand than you would your natural locks, as the add-ons can have the hairs fall out if handled overly rough.

By taking the proper steps to preserve your extension’s looks and health, they can last up to half a year. So invest in a head full of luxuriously bouncy locks that will make you feel confident and sexy!

Cinco de Mayo Makeup

photo 6

Planning on going out this Cinco de Mayo? Infuse some Latin inspiration into your look! If youwant to wear a classic look inspired by some Hispanic bombshells like Lily Estefan, Demi Lovato and Salma Hayek, sport a soft, smoky eye with a bold red lips to really make a statement. To really make the most of this style, find a matte, long-wear lipstick so you don’t have to re-apply often, and use a lip liner or brush to put it on so your lines are crisp and precise. If you opt to wear a strongly red shade, make sure that the dark eye shadows are applied lightly to your lids; however, if you are wearing a more neutral lip, play up the drama of your gaze with emoting, darker tints.  photo 1It’s usually best to choose one feature (either lips or eyes) to focus on so that you don’t look overly “done up” and have your features  competing with each other. A balanced look always looks better.

For a more playful, Cinco de Mayo look, use your cosmetics to exhibit the colors of the Mexican flag: red, green and white. While there are many ways you can do this, I chose to combine rouged lips with green eye shadow. To make sure that my look was bright but tasteful, I blended the green with gold and dark browns to downplay the hue’s intensity; to create a sexy, green smoky eye, you can always blend black into the crease. If the idea of displaying a green lid with red lips makes you uneasy, a tamer option is to have a neutral eye that is enhanced with emerald liquid or pencil eyeliner.

Dress to Impress at your Next Career Fair

No matter what you’re doing, first impressions are everything. So when it comes to the business world, you should always dress for the job you want, not the job you have.

When you’re young it’s almost second nature to be fashion conscious and try out new trends.  However, when it comes to the professional world you only have one shot to get it right. College career fairs are great ways to get your foot in the door, so make sure that the shoe always fits. To ensure a great first impression and portray that you’re the ideal employee, try these five fashion savvy yet professional looks at your next college career fair.

The Young and Fashionable Intern

Not all companies have a strict dress code, as some value your ability not only to group think, but also to be independent. A great way to show your individuality is through your clothes but, remember to keep it professional.1

Color pants are all the rage nowadays but, you don’t want to stand out like a sore thumb so try a cute yet simple printed shirt. Keep the print between two and three colors, anything more than that and you might look too busy. You want to be seen AND heard, not just seen.  If you’re staying the neutral route with your top add a bit of color to your wardrobe with a colored pencil skirt. Go for style when it comes to your shoes but keep them practical and of course tasteful. Wedges are a sure bet in this instance and to complete your look have a chick portfolio case on hand to carry your resume in.

The Retail Maven

No matter the job you are seeking to gain, be sure to dress the part. In working retail, it is likely that you might find yourself being a customer’s personal stylist so you’d want to show you have a style yourself. The key to this look is comfortable shoes as it is more than likely you will be on your feet often working the floor as an assistant manager or even visual merchandiser.2

Flat styled shoes are key to a chic and sophisticated look meant for a retail setting and when it comes to shoes they are as comfortable as you get. With spring just around the corner, white pants are an appropriate choice for your next career fair as they can easily lend themselves to a business setting. When it comes to your top go for color to show some bubbly personality which is important in retail but don’t go overboard. Instead of utilizing prints, don a solid color blouse with some interesting detail, such as this salmon colored top with release tucks up at the collar. Most retail stores carry some form of jewelry so it’s ok to glam up your look but, be sure to keep it low key and moderate in color.

The Class Act

If there is one rule that every girl should know when it comes to style is to “keep it classy”. There is nothing classier than the little black dress but, instead of going for Audrey Hepburn, throw some white into your wardrobe and channel your own inner classy working girl.3

The idea of this look is to look put together with little effort.  To start this look, you should go for a simple yet chic black and white blouse and pair it with something like this cardigan styled blazer. A pair of fitted black pants is a must in this wardrobe, so be sure that your pants are tailored to your body type. It will help you pull off this look even more, especially when paired with a set of stylish ballerina flats. Since you never know when you’re going to be asked to share your portfolio, always be ready with your digital portfolio on hand.

The Corporate College Girl

Though career fairs may be on your college turf, don’t be fooled to think that you can dress in your usual sweats or a nice pair of jeans. You can get your first real gig at a college career fair so you want to look sharp. It might be far from your comfort zone but you can really impress a future employer with a good dress suit.4

You don’t have to go with the mundane suit and tie when it comes to dressing the corporate part but, if you are trying to score some brownie points, start with a tailored jacket. There is nothing worse than an ill fitting jacket so be sure that it fits in all the right areas but at the same time allows for comfortable movement. Black is the go to color when it comes to suits, however; navy, gray and khaki are just as acceptable. If you can’t find a pant or skirt that comes with the jacket, go for a darker color than the suit jacket. This simple yet dark gray pencil skirt is a perfect example of how to pull the look off. Don’t forget that you have to wear something under your jacket and with spring on the cusps of winter, a sleeveless blouse is always a good consideration. Finally accessorize with a watch to make sure you’re always on time and a nice pair of low heels will have you all set and ready for the hot seat.

The Corporate College Girl with Color

If you love the Corporate College Girl look, but not so much the dull colors it sports don’t worry, colors are now becoming accepted in the professional world which means you can brighten up the hum drum attire a bit.5

The first rule when it comes to color is to keep it tame. If you want to go for a red jacket then make sure it isn’t bright, instead go for something like this wine colored suit top. For a colored suit jacket keep it neutral down below so khaki, black or even white is appropriate. Match the look with an off white blouse, watch and black heels to give you a put together and sophisticated look.

Remember, when it comes to career fairs you don’t have to sacrifice your personal style to meet corporate guidelines. If you’re hoping to impress a certain business, research that company’s culture and dress accordingly, this can get you some serious brownie points in the interview process.

5 Ways to Prep for Prom

 prom2013

Your prom night is going to be the most memorable evening of your life – that is, until you get married, of course! The last thing you want to do is get ready for prom at the last minute. Follow these five tips for prepping well ahead of time so that all you have to focus on during your prom is looking gorgeous and having fun.

1. Say yes to the dress!

Pick out your dress at least six weeks before prom. You don’t necessarily have to buy it at this time, but make sure you know what you’re buying, that they have it in your size and that you can actually afford it. Then, when you’re about four weeks away from prom, purchase the dress and arrange any alterations, if necessary. Remember to maintain your weight between now and prom – otherwise, your dress won’t fit the way it did when you bought it and you’ll need a last-minute alteration. If you need help finding the dress that suites you best take this quiz by Seventeen.

2. Care about your Hair"The Hills" At PaleyFest09

Wait until you have your dress to decide what hairstyle you want for prom. The neckline of your dress will play a large role in whether you want your hair up, down or half and half. You may also want to have your jewelry picked out when choosing a hairdo, too.   Some hairstyles can help to show off gorgeous earrings or an interesting necklace.

3. Be the Early Bird

booknow

Book everything early, at least four weeks ahead of time. From the restaurant where you and your pals are going after the prom to the salon that’s going to apply your makeup and nail polish, make reservations as soon as you can. Local businesses are going to be packed as prom nears – if you wait too long, you may not be able to reserve a spot at all.

4. Set the Plans in Stone

A couple of weeks before prom, get together with your friends to cement plans. Where are you all meeting to get into the limo? Who’s going as whose date? Who’s riding in the limo and who’s getting a separate ride? Where does everyone want to hang out after the prom? Coordinate early and then check up with each other in case plans change.

5. Be Ready for Anything

Pack an “Emergency Kit” for the prom. Include cash or a credit card; breath mints or gum; deodorant; touch-up makeup; your cell phone charger; and clear nail polish in case you rip your pantyhose. You can stash everything in a bag and keep it in the limo, but just make sure you have it somewhat nearby during prom night.
