How to Know Which Lip Product is Best For You

With so many different cosmetic choices for lips, it’s easy to get a little baffled about which type  product is most-suited to fit your individual needs. To help, we broke down the pros and cons of the many options.

Lip balm: This product (often known as chap stick) is the most “low-maintenance” of all the various items for lips, as it is meant to predominantly provide moisture to keep lips soft and prevent chapping. Often containing bees or carnauba wax, it is normally without pigment. While certain lines have added color, the hue is never more than a subtle tint. Lip balm is perfect for those who want to address dry or burnt lips; another appealing factor is that this type of cosmetic is significantly cheaper than many of the other categories.

Lip Gloss: Considered the most popular lip product among younger populations, lip gloss adds noticeably more color and shine than lip balm but without the intensity and thickness of other products. This cosmetic comes in a vast range of both prices and colors, and can provide multiple effects like glossy, nude lips, overt shimmer or color transformation. However, as anyone who has ever worn lip gloss can tell you, it fades fast and needs to be consistently reapplied, a process which requires little effort or procession. While it is generally cheaper than lipstick and can be worn in both formal and casual settings, be careful to pick a color and texture that is age appropriate, as many of the more sparkly lip glosses are intended for teenagers.

Lip Stick: With heavier pigmentation, it is associated with both class and sexiness. Lipstick comes in a wide array of shades and shines, and lasts longer than its gloss counterpart. As a result, it is also often slightly more pricey and should be applied with a little more care. Be aware that, with this cosmetic providing noticeable color, it is a lot easier to choose “the wrong color” of lipstick or to overwhelm your overall look. This is an ideal choice when you want to play up your lips, but if you choose to also sport dramatic eyes then consider either wearing a neutral shade or switching to lip gloss.

Lip Stain: Like lipstick, this product provide consistent, solid color. Unlike lipstick though, many lines of lip stains ultimately have a drying effect. Furthermore, more procession is needed in application, or your look will appear sloppy and uneven. Additionally, color selection is somewhat narrow as this cosmetic isn’t as popular as many others. The benefits of lip stain? It stays on longer than any other lip product, so it doesn’t smear onto glasses and other items, or need to be applied multiple times a day.

Lip Plumper: The purpose of lip plumper is to make your pout temporarily fuller. How is this achieved? By irritating the lips to increase blood flow to the area. Common components that are added to to create this effect include cinnamon, chili pepper and niacin; though many manufactures try to minimize the stinging sensation with the additives of calming ingredients, most users report experiencing slight tingling. For better or for worse, the plumping attributes or temporary.  Like lip stains, the selection in color is limited though options do range from bright red to transparent.

Product Review: Borghese Perla Duale High Impact Lipcolour

What comes to mind when you think of pink lipstick? Frosted pink abominations from the 80′s or Barbie dolls . . . that’s what I picture. So, when I was received the Borghese Perla Duale High Impact Lipcolour Perla Rosa, I was immediately struck by just how pink it was. Yes, I was a little worried. After all, it seems like a very hard color for someone to pull off for an average day. Well, let me be the first to say that I was very wrong. I received so many compliments while wearing this shade that it was awesome!

So, what look did I match my bright pink lips with? With such a statement-making color, I didn’t want to overwhelm my aesthetic, so I put on light blush and minimal eye makeup. Next, I applied nude lip liner to help prevent the product from bleeding. When using the lipstick itself, it was so soft that it felt like putting expensive coco butter on my lips! The product lasted very long and I only had to reapply once in 12 hours. With the durability of the color and the ultra-softness, I give this Borghese lipstick two thumbs up!

Inspired by the fashions from the runways from Milan, each lipcolour contains a pearlescent outer core that gives each shade that extra pearly glow. It is formulated with Vitamins A, E and C to condition lips and provide anti-oxidant protection, and Chamomile and Aloe to keep her lips smooth.

What’s Lipstick Got to Do with It?

lipstick3The phrase, “beauty does well in hard times” is something experts often bring up during periods of economic downturns and recessions.  When many high-end luxury brands are forced to cut back jobs, the beauty industry seems to be fairing pretty well for itself, considering.

The Lipstick Effect aka The “Leading Lipstick Indicator”

The Lipstick Effect is the economic theory that suggests that when the economy tanks or is uncertain, almost all retail purchases decrease, but lipsticks sales increase.

The original phrase, “leading lipstick indicator” was coined in 2001 by Leonard Lauder (the chairman of Estee Lauder) after September 11th, when lipstick sales increased 11%.   According to the Chicago Tribune, the phrase, “refers to a tendency of consumers during a recession to buy small, comforting items, such as lipstick, rather than large luxury items.”

The History of Lipstick Sales

The Lipstick Effect was first apparent during the Great Depression, when lipstick sales rose 25%!   Also noteworthy is that the employment rate for the cosmetics industry increased during both the  1990 and 2001 recessions. RAB Capital analyst, Dhaval Joshi explains, “the evidence shows that when budgets are squeezed people simply substitute large extravagances for small luxuries.”  An, “affordable splurge” leaves us with the same retail therapy that a big purchase would, but does not leave us with any buyer’s remorse afterwards.  When we are financially tight, we can’t justify spending several hundred dollars on a pair of shoes.  We can, however, justify the $20 lipstick purchase from the makeup counter.

Is the Lipstick Effect happening now?

Evidenced by major retail institutions such as Saks Fifth Avenue, who has lost about 99 million dollars, it is no surprise that things are not boding well for luxury goods sales.  But according to the Chicago Tribune, color cosmetic sales are currently up 4.4%.  In addition, Revlon recently reported that while its total sales are down, its sales of cosmetics are actually going up.

Nancy Upton, a professor of marketing at Northeastern University told Forbes Woman, “We see people making economically irrational decisions to lift their mood…cosmetics offer immediate gratification…“  Along with fast food restaurants, which also seem to be doing well despite the economy, lipstick acts as a relatively inexpensive retail pick-me-up.

Are you participating in the “Lipstick Effect”?

Don’t feel bad!  Once in a while, small personal purchases are not a bad thing.  And, lipstick is so affordable!  Total Beauty gives some suggestions for inexpensive lipstick alternatives in an article called “less vs. luxe lipstick”.  Some of their recommendations:
