Say goodbye to messy mineral makeup

Mineral Makeup On the Go!

46576_brsh_refillablebuffing_d2We adore everything Bare Escentuals, but one small gripe we have with mineral makeup in general is that it can be sooo messy!  For a woman on-the-go, (aren’t we all?) there just isn’t always time to clean up the powdery mess that can result from it.

The great thing about a small company like BareEscentuals is that they actually listen to their customer’s concerns and take it to heart.  As a result, they invented the new BareMinerals Refillable Buffing Brush.  It’s a 4″ portable makeup brush that you fill with your favorite mineral foundation, blush, or mineral veil!  Not only will this keep your BareMinerals makeup clean and mess free, but now you can take it with you wherever you go!  They call it “portable perfection.”  We call it genius.

Brush Up on Makeup Brushes

Finding and maintaining the right makeup brushes can seem a bit overwhelming.  We’ve compiled a list of everything you need to know about the little brushes that work makeup wonders.

Makeup Brush Tips and Techniques

Many people are concerned about getting the proper usage out of their brushes.   Paula Begoun, author of the the best selling book, Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me shares some insight about makeup brush techniques.

  • Always use a brush or sponge for face makeup (Your fingers could make your face look streaky)
  • Gently place brushes into makeup, try not to  move around the bristles too much.
  • Knock off any excess powder
  • Do not wipe or rub the brush against your face. (This could actually remove what you already put on!)
  • Use short, light, gliding strokes

Keep ‘em Clean!

Washing your makeup brushes is almost as important as washing your face!  Your brushes can be a haven for excess dirt and bacteria build up, so it’s very important to keep them clean and sanitary.  Because makeup brushes can be expensive and fragile, Real Simple put together this quick video tutorial with easy to follow directions for cleaning makeup brushes.

  • Once a week, spritz on a brush cleaner, which is sprayed onto the bristles and then laid flat to dry
  • Once every month, you should take the time to do a more deep cleaning using warm water and brush shampoo
  • Do not dip the base of the brush entirely into the water as this could loosen the glue and cause the bristles to fall out

How to Shop for Makeup Brushes

Now that you know how to use and take care of your brushes, you can decide which ones are right for you!

  1. Decide which types brushes you need.  If you are really into eye makeup blending, you’ll probably want a few different types of eye makeup brushes.  If you use liquid foundation and powder bronzer, you’ll need separate brushes for each of those!
  2. Synthetic vs. Natural – Synthetic brushes are better for certain types of makeup, and natural brushes are better for others.  An article by Make Me Brighter explains the difference between the two
  3. Brush Separates – You don’t necessarily have to spend a fortune, so long as you take care of them.  Try the Image Beauty brand brushes,  like their Blush Brush (Your Price, $3.99).  The price is cheap but the quality is not!
  4. Makeup Brush Sets – For an all inclusive brush set, try I Beauty’s Italian Badger Brush set, which includes ten different makeup brushes!  These brushes made from badger hair are some of the firmest brushes out there.  (Keep in mind, they are also cruelty free!)  Badger hair brushes typically have  thin tips, but are still very soft and flexible.  This set typically retails for $300.  Your Price $49.99.
